When I pick up a book on management strategies or leadership, I consider myself lucky if I can find one "gold nugget" in it. Here's a little background information on the organization I am managing. There are two male owners of a small business with 11 female employees. Our collections, production & overhead were poor. Also, the very working environment suffered due to a number of the employees being insubordinate, gossipy and not above using emotional blackmail to control the office, i.e. crying when the doctors tried to make corrections in job performance, etc...

We made some serious changes since I came on board over two years ago including letting about 40% of the old staff go. A number of the ladies left behind believed that the firings were due to "personality conflicts", even though there was objective evidence to the contrary.

3. Weakness.

Lastly, we asked them to develop a game plan for building up the weak areas. The results were amazing!

Their understanding of what the company needs to survive increased. The appreciation for how much our employers have put on the line as small business owners increased as well. The ladies now had an objective measuring stick by which to judge their OWN actions, productivity and motivations. The entitlement attitude took a hard hit in the gut!

But the best part by far was having the opportunity to see them develop their OWN goals. I have the privilege to know how to specifically encourage each member of my team! Not only is our overhead lower than ever, our productivity increased and collections are manageable, but because of your book & this exercise, our respect for each other has deepened.
